Low Blow

In a cheap attempt to boost our abysmal viewership, The Droog Report is considering selling the 1994 Hasselhoff calender from Germany. Your feedback is discouraged on this one.

Night Magic

On a rare foggy night, mysterious laser beams seem to play across the MAGIC telescope at Roque de los Muchachos on the Canary Island of La Palma. The lasers are actually part of a system designed to automatically adjust the focusing of the innovative, seventeen meter wide, multi-mirrored instrument. The MAGIC(Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) telescope itself is intended to detect gamma rays - photons with over 100 billion times the energy of visible light. As the gamma rays impact the upper atmosphere they produce air showers of high-energy particles. The MAGIC camera records in detail the brief flashes of optical light, called Cherenkov light, created by the air shower particles that ultimately correspond to cosmic sources of extreme gamma-rays. While the MAGIC I telescope became operational this year, the dramatic picture shows the nearly completed version of the instrument in October 2003.

Who Is Gnarls Barkley?

"I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that phase.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space

And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much"

Moon Dog

I met Moon Dog on the corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco. I traded him the key to an airport locker I'd found for two box seats to the Giants game. He came with me to the game. It didn't hit me until later that Moon Dog wasn't wearing pants. The Giants beat the Cardinals 7-1.

Ed Jenkins and the Recipe for Soul

When you need some soul in your life, all you need to do is ask Chef Ed Jenkins. I met Ed in Brooklyn, NY at a small private high school called Berkeley Carroll. Long before scientologist Issaac Hayes became "Chef" on South Park, Ed was cooking up more than just food for the kids. Just like Lou Reed, Ed is a true 'soul man'. I interviewed Ed in 1999 and although his whereabouts are unknown, his words resonate even today. (Audio coming soon...)

The Recipe for Soul:
All you need is 2 tablespoons of funk,
1/2 a cup of soul,
Put your feet on a rock,
Pat it and don't ya dare stop,
Just about as groovy as a 5 cent ruby,
Yall get down

It's interesting that one of the ingredients for soul is 1/2 cup of soul. I find that fascinating.
